Time for Advanced Cardiac Life Support Recertification? Why Studying is More Important Than Ever

If you’re one of the many busy healthcare professionals or first responders whose advanced life support (ACLS) certification is up for renewal, spending hours studying may not be at the top of your priority list. However, with changes to first aid and emergency response guidelines now a standard part of many advanced cardiac life support recertification courses, it’s important to be prepared to spend some time studying the new modules in your ACLS provider course.

It’s important to brush up on infrequently used information
Though you may use some of the techniques and sequences taught in ACLS certification courses on a daily basis, it’s important to recognize the areas in which you may be a bit rusty. As you prepare for advanced cardiac life support recertification, plan to spend some more time studying techniques, sequences and information you use less frequently. You never know when you may need to use these important tools.

New guidelines mean new things to learn
Every five years, the American Heart Association makes recommendations and offers improved guidelines for delivering life-saving care. In late 2020, this national organization once again released updated recommendations that impact certification and recertification for advanced cardiac life support. The new recommendations don’t suggest that earlier guidelines were unsafe or ineffective; they’re simply more up-to-date.

Key changes in 2010 include:

  • Changes in recommendations for use of quantitative waveform capnography.
  • Changes in the ACLS cardiac arrest algorithm.
  • New recommendations for post-cardiac arrest care.
  • Changes in recommendations for management of pulseless electrical activity or asystole.
  • Changes to basic life support recommendations, including a change in cardiopulmonary resuscitation sequencing from A-B-C to C-A-B.

Health Ed Solutions has already incorporated the 2010 recommendations in advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support courses. When preparing for your exam, plan to spend more time reviewing new information in these key areas.

Studying can be simple and efficient with an online advanced life support course
Because recertification doesn’t require you to complete an in-person skills test, online courses are an effective and efficient option. The self-paced structure of an online course allows busy professionals to complete coursework, study materials and complete the certification exam at their own pace.
