Stay Safe This Fall
As a healthcare professional, staying fit always takes planning to fit into your busy schedule. Don’t let the change of seasons derail your efforts to stay healthy. The weather is getting cooler and the days are getting shorter, which means your normal morning or evening workouts need to adjust too.
And remember – you know the signs of distress in your patients. Make sure you pay attention to them yourself. If you have indications of Raynaud’s disease, asthma or heart problems, make sure to check with your physician to make sure working out in the cold is a good decision for you.
If you run or engage in other activities outside, follow these safety tips to make sure your fitness – and your health – stays on track.
- Get Reflective
Whether you’re outdoors at dawn, dusk or full dark, make sure that you have reflective gear so motorists and others can see you clearly. Head lamps, flashing arm bands, reflective tape or strips and more will make sure you don’t get lost in the shadows.
- Layer Up
Though you may start out cold, once you get your blood pumping you’ll warm up quickly. If you dress in layers, you can remove them as you get warmer, so you can avoid overheating.
- Cover Up
When temperatures dip and the wind starts to bite, make sure you protect your extremities. Ears, hands and feet should all be protected from harsh conditions. Thin or thick gloves depending on the temperature can be easily removed, and a hat or headband can protect vulnerable ears.
- Stay Safe
Be aware of your surroundings, and if you’re running alone, vary your route from day to day. Refrain from headphones if it’s dark out, so you can hear what is going on around you.
- Don’t forget the basics
Even though temperatures are much colder, you can still get sunburned or get dehydrated. Make sure you’re still drinking plenty of fluids, and always put on sunscreen before heading outdoors.
