The Five W's of American Heart Association ACLS Classes
As a healthcare professional, you may be required to receive advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) training. The initial certification process is standard, in that it includes three parts – a didactic portion in which you learn ACLS protocols (classroom or on-line), a hands-on training session, and a certification exam – but there are many options for how and where you can receive your training. Here is everything you need to know about earning an ACLS provider card.
Who needs to be certified?
Many healthcare professionals are required to receive ACLS training. This includes (but is not limited to) physicians, registered nurses and nurse practitioners, EMTs, pharmacists, paramedics and fire fighters.
What is an AHA ACLS provider card?
The American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS provider card provides proof that an individual has completed an ACLS training course through an AHA course, as well as a hands-on skills practice and testing session with an AHA instructor. Click here for online ACLS certification.
Where do I go to get certified?
American Heart Association ACLS classes can be taken online, meaning you can access your coursework from anywhere. After you have completed the cognitive portion of your training, you will need to complete your skills practice and testing with an instructor in your area.
When can I access my online ACLS course?
Because American Heart Association ACLS classes are offered online, you can access and complete your coursework 24 hours a day. The HeartCode® ACLS Part 1 course generally takes about 10 hours to complete, depending on your pace.
Why should I get an AHA ACLS provider card?
While many healthcare providers are generally required to have ACLS certification, certain employers may specifically require an individual to provide an AHA ACLS provider card in order to gain or maintain employment. However, not all employers require individuals to receive their ACLS certification through an AHA course. If you are not required to take an AHA course, you have the option of looking into other certification providers. Many providers, including Health Ed Solutions, offer courses that follow the AHA’s guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiovascular care.
