ACLS Care: Ohio Healthcare Services May Be Affected by an Aging Population
The United States’ senior population is growing, and Ohio is above the national average – in 2009, 12.9 percent of the U.S. population was over the age of 65, while 13.9 percent of Ohio’s population was over 65.
An aging population will lead to a higher need for healthcare services and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) care. OH is one state in particular that is already experiencing a significant shortage of qualified healthcare workers, a trend that is expected to extend into the future, according to the Ohio Department of Aging.
National Trends
This trend can be seen on a national level, too. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth is expected for many occupations within the medical field due to the aging population.
- Employment of emergency medical technicians and paramedics is projected to grow 9 percent between 2008 and 2018.
- Employment of registered nurses should grow by 22 percent from 2008 to 2018.
- Employment of physicians and surgeons is expected to grow 22 percent from 2008 to 2018.
Ohio ACLS Care
These occupations generally require certification in ACLS care. Ohio’s growing senior population will create an increased demand for ACLS certified professionals in the upcoming years.
ACLS certified professionals are trained in:
- Managing cardiac arrest
- Identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes
- Recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care
- Following ACLS algorithms
- Developing effective resuscitation team dynamics
