Taking a Basic Life Support Online Course? Use These Basic Life Support Guidelines to Succeed

Acing your Basic Life Support (BLS) online course is easy, once you become familiar with learning virtually, rather than in a classroom. The tips and techniques described below will help you not only master the information provided in your BLS online course, but also prepare you to succeed in any other online courses you pursue for your professional growth.

Learning strategies for your Basic Life Support online course

One of the great things about taking the BLS course, or any online course, is that you’re in charge of your learning process.

In an online course, you take complete responsibility for your own learning process and outcomes – not just the completion of your certification, but what you actually learn and can apply. If you’re not used to learning virtually, this can feel a bit different, but also liberating: you’re free to learn at your own pace.

If you’re new to online learning, check out the list of “insider tips,” compiled from others who’ve taken online classes, below. Try them with your BLS online course and see how they work for you!

  • Get organized early, before you begin the course. Have your desk space organized, your study guide close at hand. Have your note-taking material (a pen and notebook or a separate document on your computer) ready so you can easily jot down questions and/or things to remember. Have your favorite coffee/tea/etc. mug where you can get to it easily. The goal is to start your learning process in a relaxed, organized, no-distractions manner with an environment that lets you focus on learning.
  • Understand how the technology works before you start the course – do you need any special software, log-ins, multimedia supports? For the BLS course, your only technology requirements will be access to the online portion of the course.
  • Commit to a specific time each week to devote to your class – perhaps Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m., or some other variation. Make sure friends and family know this time is flagged as “occupied” as if you were sitting in a campus classroom. Test-drive your schedule so you can see what sorts of obstacles/challenges might arise, and put together strategies for dealing with them before they occur.
  • If you are employed outside your home, on the weekend, line up study periods over your lunch hour, to make use of this “found time” of an extra hour (or five) every week.
  • Take control of your online education environment: no distractions, no phones. Go for quiet unless background or white noise helps you focus.
  • Notify the course provider of problems or issues as soon as they arise so you can quickly resolve the issue and continue making progress through your course.  Health Education Solutions has customer service available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time.
  • Experiment with study techniques to find the ones that work best for you. For example, use a variety of strategies to remember key concepts, testing yourself to see how well you understand the courses main points, using visual aids (posted notes, highlighted text, graphical concept maps) to enhance learning.

Learn two skills at once with your Basic Life Support online course

Online education is an effective, convenient way to continue your career growth, whether it's a career in nursing, paramedics, or a physician assistant, especially for professional certification. But if you’ve not taken an online course before, you may find that you need to shift your learning approach just a bit from your familiar classroom-based experience.

Why not use your BLS online course to get “two for the price of one,” that is, two learning opportunities for the price of just one course? You’ll be able to apply your new knowledge across all of your online courses, and continue your career growth quickly, easily, and conveniently.
